“Nobody’s Getting Off the Hook”: Trump’s Warning Sparks Fears of New Tariffs on China and Tech Imports

Despite a temporary pause on reciprocal tariffs, US President Donald Trump’s latest remarks suggest a fresh wave of levies—this time targeting semiconductors and electronics—may be imminent.

April 14, 2025: Washington:
US President Donald Trump reignited global trade tensions on Sunday, declaring that “nobody is getting off the hook” when it comes to his aggressive tariff policies—especially China. His statement, posted on his social media platform, came just days after the US announced a 90-day pause on certain reciprocal tariffs, including exemptions for key electronics like smartphones and laptops.

In a fiery online post, Trump insisted that no country would be spared from scrutiny over what he called “unfair trade balances and non-monetary tariff barriers.” Refuting media reports suggesting exemptions were permanent, he clarified, “There was no Tariff ‘exception’ announced on Friday. These products are just moving to a different tariff bucket.”

New Focus: Semiconductors and Electronics

The US President further stated that an upcoming National Security Tariff Investigation would examine the entire electronics supply chain, including semiconductors, suggesting a broader and more targeted tariff wave is in the pipeline.

Echoing the president’s tone, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick confirmed on Sunday that electronics temporarily exempted from tariffs would soon face a separate round of duties. “These are coming soon,” Lutnick said in an interview. “Everything from semiconductors to flat panels will be covered under new tariffs aimed at reshoring production.”

Linking Trade With the Fentanyl Crisis

Trump’s post also reiterated his belief that Chinese companies have been complicit in the fentanyl crisis gripping the US. He stressed that products from China remain subject to existing 20% fentanyl-linked tariffs and pledged to further isolate “hostile trading nations” economically.

“We cannot let [China] continue to abuse us on trade, like they have for decades. Those days are over,” Trump declared.

MAGA 2.0: Economic Nationalism

Promoting his Make America Great Again revival, Trump touted upcoming tax and regulatory cuts passed by Congress, promising they will trigger a “Golden Age” of US manufacturing and job growth. He emphasized the importance of producing essential components domestically to avoid dependency on regions like Southeast Asia.

While Wall Street took comfort in the short-term pause, Trump’s remarks on Sunday have reignited fears of renewed supply chain disruptions and price spikes—particularly in the tech sector. Industry analysts expect increased volatility in the coming weeks.
