February 4, 2025: OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is reportedly set to visit India on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, as part of an industry engagement and discussions with top government officials, news agency PTI revealed. However, this information could not be independently verified by Hindustan Times.

This would mark Altman’s second trip to India in two years and occurs amid various developments shaping the global artificial intelligence (AI) landscape. OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with news agency ANI, which alleges that OpenAI used its content to train AI models without compensation. OpenAI, in its defense, has maintained that it only utilizes publicly available data and dismissed the claim, stating that Indian courts lack jurisdiction over the matter.
Altman’s visit also comes at a critical juncture when OpenAI’s dominance in the AI sphere faces a significant challenge from DeepSeek, a Chinese AI company. DeepSeek’s R1 model, developed for less than $6 million, operates at a fraction of the power consumed by ChatGPT. This economical and efficient model has gained immense popularity, even surpassing ChatGPT as the top free app on Apple’s App Store.

DeepSeek’s success has shaken the US tech industry, with major repercussions. For instance, Nvidia, a leading AI chipmaker, experienced a record-breaking $590 billion market cap loss in a single day. The event marked the largest one-day stock wipeout in corporate history.
While AI competition heats up globally, countries are ramping up their AI infrastructure. The US recently announced “Stargate,” a $500 billion AI data center project involving OpenAI, Masayoshi Son’s SoftBank, and Oracle. OpenAI also launched SB OpenAI Japan, a joint venture with SoftBank.
India, too, has ambitious AI plans. Union IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently unveiled the government’s intention to launch an indigenous AI model that could operate for less than ₹100 per hour, potentially revolutionizing the affordability of AI in the country.
Altman’s visit could signify deeper collaborations between OpenAI and India, with the fireside chat likely touching upon key issues such as AI regulation, innovation, and India’s aspirations to carve a niche in the global AI landscape.
