Despite global tariff tensions under Trump, Prada cements the biggest acquisition in its history, regaining Versace from US-based Capri Holdings.
April 10, 2025: 🇮🇹 Prada Brings Versace Home in Landmark $1.4 Billion Acquisition
In a historic move that reshapes the global luxury fashion landscape, Prada has confirmed the acquisition of Versace in a cash deal worth $1.4 billion, reclaiming one of Italy’s most celebrated fashion houses from American control.
“We are delighted to welcome Versace to the Prada Group… a brand with which we share a strong commitment to creativity, craftsmanship, and heritage,” said Patrizio Bertelli, Prada Group chairman and executive director.
🛍️ Biggest Deal in Prada’s 112-Year Legacy
The deal marks Prada’s largest-ever acquisition, beating out stiff competition in an increasingly consolidated luxury space. It also returns Versace to Italian ownership for the first time since 2018, when Capri Holdings (owner of Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo) acquired it for $2.1 billion.
But amid shifting global trends favoring quiet luxury over flamboyant styles, Versace struggled to maintain its edge — leading Capri to explore a sale.
💰 Lower Price, Higher Stakes
Thanks to global economic uncertainty and fresh tariff hurdles under Donald Trump’s trade policy, Capri settled for a lower exit valuation than its purchase price.
Still, insiders believe Prada is getting a bargain, especially as it now positions itself to rival luxury giants like LVMH and Kering.

🎭 Changing of the Guard at Versace
In a symbolic lead-up to the deal, Donatella Versace stepped down last month after three decades at the helm. She took over the brand in 1997 following her brother Gianni Versace’s tragic murder.
Her successor, Dario Vitale — best known for reviving Prada’s Miu Miu label — is now tasked with reimagining Versace for a new era. Donatella remains onboard as chief brand ambassador.

📅 What’s Next?
The acquisition is expected to be finalized in the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. Analysts say the deal could reignite global interest in the Versace brand, while strengthening Prada’s hold on Gen Z and millennial markets — especially if Vitale injects Miu Miu’s youthful flair into the Versace DNA.
As one fashion insider put it: “It’s not just a sale — it’s a homecoming.”
