Rs 500 Notes To Be Discontinued? Here’s The Truth About it!

Centre calls YouTube video claiming phase-out of Rs 500 notes by 2026 ‘fake news’; RBI has made no such announcement.

New Delhi | June 7, 2025: The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has officially refuted a viral YouTube video claiming that the Rs 500 currency notes will be discontinued by 2026. The government confirmed that no such plan is under consideration by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), and the notes continue to remain legal tender.

The video, uploaded on June 2 by the channel ‘Capital TV’, claimed that the government would begin phasing out Rs 500 notes from March 2026. It quickly gained traction with over five lakh views, causing confusion among the public.

However, the PIB Fact Check division took to X (formerly Twitter) to debunk the claim:

Rs 500 notes have NOT been discontinued and remain legal tender,” the PIB clarified, urging citizens to verify financial news only from official sources.

Clarification on Currency Validity

The Rs 500 notes currently in circulation were introduced following the 2016 demonetisation exercise, which saw the withdrawal of the old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. These new notes feature the Red Fort and have denominations written in 17 languages, including Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil, and Urdu.

Contrary to the speculation, there has been no announcement or notification by the RBI regarding the withdrawal of the denomination, unlike the Rs 2,000 notes, which were officially pulled from circulation in May 2023 — though they still remained legal tender.

Government Advisory

The PIB urged citizens to remain cautious:

Do not fall for misinformation. Always verify news from official government or RBI sources before believing or sharing it.

This advisory comes amid rising concerns over fake news and financial misinformation circulating on social media and video platforms, which have the potential to trigger unnecessary panic.
