Russian Strike Hits Indian Pharma Warehouse in Ukraine, Kyiv Alleges Deliberate Targeting

Ukraine accuses Moscow of destroying Indian firm Kusum’s facility in Kyiv; British envoy confirms pharma warehouse attack, raising diplomatic concerns amid ongoing conflict.

New Delhi / Kyiv, April 12:
A Russian missile has reportedly struck the warehouse of Indian pharmaceutical company Kusum in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, prompting sharp condemnation from the Ukrainian Embassy in India, which alleged that Moscow is “deliberately targeting” Indian business interests in the war-torn country.

In a strongly worded post on X, the Ukrainian Embassy stated:

“Today, a Russian missile struck the warehouse of Indian pharmaceutical company Kusum in Ukraine. While claiming ‘special friendship’ with India, Moscow deliberately targets Indian businesses – destroying medicines meant for children and the elderly.”

While the Ukrainian claim points to a missile strike, Martin Harris, the British Ambassador to Ukraine, stated that Russian drones were responsible for completely destroying a major pharmaceutical warehouse in Kyiv, without directly naming Kusum.

“This morning Russian drones completely destroyed a major pharmaceuticals warehouse in Kyiv, incinerating stocks of medicines needed by the elderly and children. Russia’s campaign of terror against Ukrainian civilians continues,” Harris said on X, sharing a photo of the aftermath.

Background and Diplomatic Context

The strike comes amid a fragile ceasefire understanding that Ukraine and Russia had reached last month, brokered by the US, to avoid targeting each other’s energy infrastructure. However, both nations have accused each other of violating that moratorium in recent days.

India, while maintaining neutrality in the Russia-Ukraine conflict, has consistently called for peace and avoiding civilian casualties. India has also maintained strong economic ties with Russia, especially in the energy sector, importing over 1.48 million barrels of Russian crude per day in February alone.

This incident raises fresh diplomatic challenges for New Delhi, as Ukraine publicly questions the sincerity of Moscow’s ties with India in light of this alleged attack.

No immediate casualties have been reported, and the Indian government is yet to officially respond to the incident.
