Scooter Segment Leads Two-Wheeler Growth, Outpaces Motorcycles in FY25
New Delhi, November 23 – The two-wheeler (2W) segment, particularly scooters, has witnessed robust growth this year, surpassing the motorcycles segment, according to a report by Motilal Oswal. The report highlights that the scooter segment in the internal combustion engine (ICE) two-wheelers category posted a remarkable 18.4% year-on-year (YoY) growth year-to-date (YTD) in FY25, outpacing the 13% YoY growth seen in motorcycles.
“Within 2Ws, the ICE scooter segment has posted 18.4 per cent YoY growth YTD, the motorcycle segment has seen ~13 per cent YoY growth,” the report stated.
The overall ICE two-wheeler segment maintained its momentum, recording a 14.6% YoY growth in YTDFY25. In stark contrast, the passenger vehicle (PV) segment grew by just 0.6% YoY, reflecting the dominance of two-wheelers in the Indian automotive market.
“2W ICE segment continues to outperform, with 14.6 per cent YoY growth in YTDFY25, compared with muted 0.6 per cent YoY growth for PV segment,” the report noted.
Divergent growth trends were observed within the motorcycle segment:
The PV segment continued to show sluggish growth, expanding by only 0.9% YoY in October 2024 and 0.6% YoY in YTDFY25. However, utility vehicles (UVs) provided a bright spot, contributing 64.8% to the overall PV market.
Despite the two-wheeler segment’s stellar performance, the report cautioned that growth may moderate in the remainder of FY25. However, the sustained demand for scooters and select motorcycle sub-segments demonstrates the resilience of the two-wheeler market in India.
