Sensex Index: Why Is Market Down Today?

July 18, 2025: Sensex Index – The Indian stock market opened with mixed cues as investors responded to major developments in the real estate and consumer durables sectors. Leading the real estate rally, Godrej Properties extended its winning streak for the fifth consecutive session, touching ₹2,358 apiece after the company announced the acquisition of a 48-acre land parcel in Bengaluru.

The deal, hailed as a strategic move by analysts, is expected to bolster Godrej’s presence in South India’s real estate market, particularly in the high-demand residential segment of Bengaluru.

Meanwhile, Reliance Retail created fresh buzz in the market by announcing the acquisition of Kelvinator, a once-iconic brand in the Indian home appliance segment. This move aligns with Reliance’s strategy to dominate the consumer durables space and expand its footprint in middle-class households across the country.

“This acquisition underlines our commitment to reshaping India’s consumer durables landscape by offering affordability and variety,” Reliance Retail said in a statement.

However, Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) shares saw a marginal decline, down 0.21% to ₹1,474, with trading volumes significantly lower than average. The stock touched an intraday high of ₹1,485.05 and a low of ₹1,470.55. With a current market capitalisation of ₹1.99 lakh crore, RIL is now 7.27% below its 52-week high and 32.13% above its 52-week low.

In IPO news, GNG Electronics announced the price band of ₹225–₹237 for its upcoming initial public offering, set to open later this month. The small electronics firm aims to raise funds for capacity expansion and technological upgrades.

As of mid-morning, the Sensex index hovered in a narrow range amid global uncertainties and domestic earnings anticipation. Analysts suggest keeping an eye on the realty and FMCG sectors, especially after the upbeat developments from Godrej and Reliance.
