Sensex, Nifty 50 Close Higher Despite Profit Booking; Extend Weekly Winning Streak

Indian stock markets ended the day with modest gains as late-session profit booking trimmed earlier highs, but optimism around US-India trade talks fueled a third straight week of growth.

May 2, 2025- New Delhi: The Indian stock market closed on a positive note on Friday, May 2, though benchmark indices gave up a large chunk of their intraday gains amid profit booking. Despite this late-session reversal, both the Sensex and Nifty 50 extended their winning streak to a third consecutive week, bolstered by renewed foreign investor interest and optimism surrounding US-India trade negotiations.

After opening flat, the indices surged in the early session driven by strong buying in financial stocks. However, the momentum faded in the second half as traders booked profits at higher levels.

The Nifty 50, which touched an intraday high before slipping 243 points, eventually settled at 24,346, up 0.05%. The Sensex also erased 662 points from its day’s peak but managed to close 0.34% higher at 80,517.

For the week, the Sensex gained 1.64% and the Nifty 50 rose 1.28%, marking their third straight weekly advance. The uptrend was supported by sustained foreign institutional inflows, with overseas investors pumping in ₹37,400 crore into Indian equities over 11 trading sessions from April 15 to 30.

Market sentiment received a further boost from trade developments between India and the United States. Talks toward a potential bilateral tariff agreement are reportedly progressing, with US President Donald Trump expressing optimism about reaching a deal.

Simultaneously, easing tensions between the US and China—after Beijing signaled willingness to engage in trade talks—offered relief to global investors and contributed to positive sentiment in emerging markets like India.

Indian markets were closed on May 1 due to the Maharashtra Day holiday.
