Geopolitical tensions and US stagflation fears hit Indian equity market; over 100 stocks hit lower circuits
June 19, 2025: The Indian stock market witnessed a turbulent session on Thursday, June 19, as benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 closed marginally lower, while mid- and small-cap stocks suffered a sharp selloff. The BSE Midcap index plunged 1.64%, and the Smallcap index tanked 1.77%, leading to a massive ₹4 lakh crore erosion in investor wealth.
At close, the Sensex fell 83 points (0.10%) to 81,361.87, and the Nifty 50 declined 19 points (0.08%) to 24,793.25. The total market capitalisation of BSE-listed firms dropped from ₹446.3 lakh crore to ₹442.5 lakh crore.
Geopolitical Overhang Market sentiment weakened due to fears of the Israel-Iran conflict escalating. President Trump’s warning of “something big” next week and US Fed’s stagflation signals added to investor caution.
