Tariff War Gets a Meme Makeover: AI Videos Show Trump, Musk in Sneaker Factory, Spark Satirical Storm on Chinese Social Media
April 12, 2025: The US-China tariff war just took a surreal—and comical—turn. In the wake of President Donald Trump’s 125% tariff hike on Chinese goods, Chinese netizens have turned to AI-generated satire to hit back, creating viral content featuring American political and business figures in blue-collar factory jobs.

One particularly popular video circulating on Chinese social media platforms like TikTok and X shows Trump and Elon Musk working side-by-side on a Nike sneaker assembly line, both clad in blue factory jumpsuits. In another AI-generated clip, Vice President JD Vance is seen assembling an iPhone, his red cap notably stripped of its signature “MAGA” lettering.
These memes are a direct jab at Trump’s ‘re-industrialization’ pitch, highlighting how American leaders may have to turn to manual labor as global manufacturing costs surge due to the trade war. Chinese state media has amplified these satirical videos, portraying the tariff hike as counterproductive to US economic interests.

“We are Chinese. We are not afraid of provocations. We don’t back down,” said Mao Ning, China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, in response to the latest tariff round.
The satire arrives amid serious diplomatic fallout. On Saturday, China confirmed that its own 125% retaliatory tariffs on US imports would take effect, closely mirroring Washington’s move. China’s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao has warned the WTO that these actions by the US will “inflict serious harm on developing nations”, particularly the least developed countries.
“The United States has introduced tariff measures that bring enormous uncertainty to the world… and chaos within its own borders,” said Wang in a call with WTO Chief Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
China has also announced it would ignore future US tariffs, claiming it is no longer economically viable for its importers to rely on American goods.
