Following discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the EV giant has started recruiting for multiple positions in Mumbai and Delhi.
February 18, 2025: Tesla Kicks Off Hiring in India After Modi-Musk Talks in the US
Tesla Inc. has begun hiring in India, signaling its imminent entry into the country’s electric vehicle (EV) market. This move comes shortly after Elon Musk’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, where discussions revolved around Tesla’s India expansion.

The EV giant has posted job listings for 13 positions on LinkedIn, covering both customer-facing and back-end roles. Among these, at least five roles, including service technicians and advisory positions, are open in Mumbai and Delhi, while others such as customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist are specific to Mumbai.
Why Tesla Is Entering India Now
Tesla has long considered India for expansion but was held back by high import duties. However, India has now reduced its basic customs duty on high-end electric cars (priced above $40,000) from 110% to 70%, making it a more attractive market for Tesla.

Although India’s EV market is still in its early stages, it presents a huge growth opportunity for Tesla amid slowing global sales. Last year, India sold nearly 100,000 electric cars, while China—Tesla’s largest market—saw 11 million EV sales.
Modi-Musk Meeting & Its Impact
Musk met PM Modi and former US President Donald Trump in Washington last week. Following the meeting, Trump confirmed that Modi had agreed to boost US military purchases, including potential F-35 fighter jet deals.

Although Musk holds a key position in Trump’s administration, it remains unclear whether his meeting with Modi was in his capacity as Tesla’s CEO or his role in government advisory. His increasing involvement in political and business negotiations has raised questions about the overlap between his private ventures and political engagements.
What’s Next for Tesla in India?
Tesla’s hiring spree in India suggests that the company is setting up its sales and service network before launching its first car in the country. With the Indian government relaxing import tariffs and Tesla seeking new avenues to counter slowing global EV sales, the stage seems set for Tesla’s much-anticipated entry into the Indian market.
