Tesla Opens First Showroom in India at Mumbai’s BKC Today: Model Y, Model 3 on Display
Mumbai, July 15:
Tesla officially opened its first showroom in India today at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking a significant milestone in its long-awaited entry into the world’s third-largest car market. The debut comes after months of speculation and amidst CEO Elon Musk’s complaints about India’s steep import tariffs on electric vehicles.
The launch event is being referred to as the inauguration of the “Tesla Experience Centre”, which will initially display the Tesla Model Y and potentially the Model 3, according to media reports.
Tesla has imported six units of the Model Y SUV from its Shanghai plant. These cars are currently meant for display and demonstration, with no immediate confirmation on retail sales.
The Model 3 is also expected to be showcased at the showroom, but official sale dates and pricing are yet to be announced.

Due to India’s 70% import duty on fully built EVs, the base price of ~$32,500 (₹27 lakh) for the Model Y could rise to ₹46–₹56 lakh, making it accessible to a niche segment of Indian buyers.
From January to June, Tesla reportedly imported cars, chargers, and accessories worth $1 million, primarily from China and the US, laying the groundwork for this launch.
Tesla’s India entry comes as it seeks to revive flagging global sales, especially in saturated Western markets. With rising interest in EVs among India’s urban upper-middle class and ongoing policy reforms, Tesla sees strategic value in early brand establishment, even with initial pricing constraints.
