The White House confirmed the move late Tuesday, stating it was a necessary countermeasure to China’s restrictions on rare earth metals and high-tech materials essential to sectors such as aerospace, semiconductors, and military manufacturing.

🔥 What Triggered the Tariff Spike?

According to the official fact sheet:

  • China banned exports of gallium, germanium, and antimony—materials crucial to defense and electronics.
  • This week, Beijing suspended exports of six heavy rare earth metals and rare earth magnets, further tightening its grip on key global supply chains.

“China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States,” the statement read, accusing Beijing of trying to “choke off supplies” to critical industries.

President Trump described the decision as part of his “America First Trade Policy”, aimed at protecting U.S. industries and restoring control over strategic resources.

“On Day One, President Trump initiated his America First Trade Policy to make America’s economy great again,” the White House said.

A national security investigation into foreign dependence for strategic imports is also underway, signaling broader economic and defense concerns.
