The White House confirmed the move late Tuesday, stating it was a necessary countermeasure to China’s restrictions on rare earth metals and high-tech materials essential to sectors such as aerospace, semiconductors, and military manufacturing.
According to the official fact sheet:
“China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States,” the statement read, accusing Beijing of trying to “choke off supplies” to critical industries.

President Trump described the decision as part of his “America First Trade Policy”, aimed at protecting U.S. industries and restoring control over strategic resources.
“On Day One, President Trump initiated his America First Trade Policy to make America’s economy great again,” the White House said.
A national security investigation into foreign dependence for strategic imports is also underway, signaling broader economic and defense concerns.
So far, over 75 countries are negotiating exemptions, but China remains singled out for its retaliatory trade actions.
The full list of impacted products has not been released, but analysts warn the 245% tariff could affect a wide range of goods, from electronics and auto parts to raw materials and consumer devices.
