Trump Teases “Very Big” Trade Deal With India At White House Event

Speaking at the ‘Big Beautiful Event’, Donald Trump revealed that the US and India are close to finalising a landmark trade deal aimed at boosting bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030.

Washington / New Delhi, June 27, 2025 — US President Donald Trump has hinted at a major trade deal with India, calling it a “very big one” during an address at the ‘Big Beautiful Event’ held at the White House. His remarks follow a four-day closed-door negotiation between Indian and US trade delegations earlier this month.

“Everybody wants to make a deal… We have one coming up, maybe with India. A very big one,” Trump told the gathering, suggesting that talks with India are nearing a breakthrough.

President Trump also clarified that the US would not pursue trade agreements with every country, asserting, “Some we are just going to send them a letter — say thank you very much. You are to pay 25, 35, 45 per cent. That’s the easy way to do it.”

The discussions between the two countries reportedly centered on increasing market access for both industrial and agricultural goods, reducing tariffs, and addressing non-tariff trade barriers. The Indian delegation was led by Trade Ministry official Rajesh Agrawal, while the US team was helmed by the Office of the United States Trade Representative.

With current bilateral trade standing at approximately $190 billion, both sides are aiming to raise it to $500 billion by 2030. Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had earlier confirmed that a “balanced and mutually beneficial” agreement is under negotiation, following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump in February 2025.

“This deal will benefit both economies, businesses on both sides, and our people,” Goyal said.

Earlier this month, US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick also expressed optimism about the agreement, indicating that the two countries were close to finding common ground.

In the same speech, President Trump also disclosed that he had signed a new trade agreement with China just a day earlier. Although specific terms were not publicly detailed, a White House official confirmed that the pact focuses on accelerating rare earth exports from China to the US and sets a framework for implementing the Geneva agreement — a notable thaw after recent trade tensions between the two superpowers.

As India and the US continue to deepen strategic and economic ties, the potential trade deal could mark a turning point in global commerce and regional influence.
