Trump Threatens to Cancel Elon Musk’s Government Contracts Amid Explosive Fallout
Washington D.C. | June 6, 2025 —
The political bromance between US President Donald Trump and billionaire tech magnate Elon Musk has turned into a full-blown war. In a dramatic escalation of their public feud, Trump has threatened to cut Musk’s government contracts, calling it the “easiest way to save money.”

“The easiest way to save billions in our budget is to terminate Elon’s governmental subsidies and contracts,” Trump posted on his TruthSocial platform Thursday, a jab at Musk just hours after criticizing him in a joint press conference with Germany’s chancellor.
The rift between the two began earlier this week when Musk condemned Trump’s flagship “Big Beautiful Bill,” a sweeping tax cut and spending plan that Musk slammed as a “disgusting abomination” that would balloon the deficit and hurt the EV industry.
Musk and Trump’s relationship — once filled with political camaraderie, campaign donations, and Cabinet meetings — has unraveled in spectacular fashion. Musk reportedly donated at least $250 million to Trump’s 2024 campaign and served as an informal adviser, attending rallies, Cabinet sessions, and even spending nights at the Lincoln Bedroom.
But on Thursday, Trump called Musk “very disappointing,” mocking his recent black eye and alluding to his departure from public office service.
Musk fired back: “Without me, Trump would’ve lost the election… Such ingratitude.”
At the heart of the clash is the controversial spending bill which rolls back key tax credits for electric vehicles — a major blow to Tesla. Trump, defending the bill, accused Musk of being upset solely because of the EV cuts.
Musk responded:
“False. This bill was never shown to me. It passed in the dead of night before most of Congress could even read it.”
He added:
“Keep the cuts. Ditch the mountain of DISGUSTING PORK in the bill.”
Another point of tension: Musk’s promotion of Jared Isaacman to lead NASA, which Trump has since rejected, calling him “totally a Democrat.”
Musk has now returned to his earlier mode of political combat — pointed social media jabs. He resurfaced Trump’s decade-old posts criticizing Republicans for overspending, questioning whether the man who posted those views still exists.
“Where is the man who wrote these words? Was he replaced by a body double!?” Musk wrote.
The fallout could have major implications. Terminating Musk’s federal contracts — which include major SpaceX and Tesla deals — would impact national projects from satellite launches to electric vehicle infrastructure.
What started as a high-powered alliance may now end in costly political and financial war.
