Trump’s Copper Tariff Jolt: Hindustan Copper, Tata Steel, SAIL Stocks Crash Up to 3.5%

Indian metal stocks tumble after US President Donald Trump imposes 50% tariff on copper imports, triggering fears of broader commodity trade disruptions.

July-9, 2025: 📉 Why Did Metal Stocks Fall Today?

Domestic metal stocks including Hindustan Copper, Tata Steel, SAIL, and others faced a sharp sell-off on Wednesday, tumbling as much as 3.5% intraday, after US President Donald Trump announced a steep 50% tariff on copper imports. The policy move sent shockwaves across global commodity markets and stoked fears of a potential wider tariff regime on industrial metals.

The Nifty Metal index was under pressure, with heavyweights like Jindal Stainless, Vedanta, NMDC, Hindalco Industries, Hindustan Zinc, and Jindal Steel & Power also falling more than 1–2% during early trade.

During a cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump confirmed his plan:

“Today, we’re doing copper. I believe the tariff on copper, we’re going to make it 50%.”

This announcement follows earlier tariffs of similar magnitude on steel and aluminium imports and signals his administration’s broader push to promote domestic metal production and reduce US dependence on foreign supply chains.

📉 Key Stock Movements:

  • Hindustan Copper: Down 3.5%, hitting a day’s low of ₹264
  • SAIL: Dropped 2.35% to ₹131.82
  • Tata Steel, Vedanta, Jindal Stainless, Hindalco, Hindustan Zinc, NMDC: Fell between 1–2%

🌐 Global Copper Price Volatility:

  • On the COMEX, copper prices surged 17% on Tuesday (a record one-day jump), hitting an all-time high
  • Early Wednesday saw prices slide over 4%
  • On the London Metal Exchange (LME), copper dropped as much as 2.4%, and later traded 0.7% lower at $9,722/ton

📦 Why It Matters for India:

The US currently imports nearly half of its copper requirements, with Chile as the primary exporter. However, India also exports copper to the US, and the introduction of steep tariffs raises concerns about reduced global demand, disrupted trade routes, and price shocks across the industry.

Further, traders who anticipated the policy shift had already rushed shipments to the US in recent months. The announcement of a higher-than-expected 50% duty and its imminent implementation indicates the window to beat the tariff may now be closed.
