UPI Services Down Again: Users Report Second Outage in a Week

Hundreds face transaction failures across major apps; NPCI yet to release official statement on April 2 outage

April 2, 2025: Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services were disrupted for thousands of users on Wednesday evening, marking the second major outage within a week. According to reports from DownDetector, over 449 complaints were logged by 8 PM, with a majority—53%—highlighting fund transfer failures on popular apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, and Paytm.

The sudden glitch sparked a wave of frustration on social media.

“Looks like UPI is down again!!,” one user posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Another quipped, “At this rate, UPI will have me washing dishes in a hotel someday.”

While the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI)—which developed and regulates UPI—has not issued an official update yet, users are drawing parallels to the March 26 outage, when NPCI attributed the disruption to “intermittent technical issues.”

Despite these outages, UPI remains the backbone of India’s booming digital payments infrastructure. According to Worldline’s India Digital Payments Report for H2 2024, UPI transaction volumes grew 42% year-on-year, reaching 93.23 billion transactions, while the transaction value surged 31% to ₹130.19 trillion.
