UPI Services To Be Suspended On on These Mobile Numbers From April 1: Here’s What You Must Do

NPCI directs banks and UPI apps to delink deactivated or reassigned numbers to curb fraud risks. Users must update or verify mobile numbers before the deadline

New Delhi, March 21, 2025:
Starting April 1, 2025, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) services will no longer function on inactive or reassigned mobile numbers, as per a new directive issued by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). The move aims to strengthen security and prevent fraudulent transactions across platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm.

🔐 Why This Step Is Necessary

Many users forget to update or deactivate their UPI accounts after changing mobile numbers. If those numbers are later reassigned to someone else, there’s a risk of unauthorised access to sensitive banking details. To prevent this, banks and payment apps have been asked to remove such numbers from the UPI system.

🏦 How Banks Will Enforce It

  • Periodic audits will identify inactive, reassigned, or deactivated numbers.
  • Affected users will receive advance notifications.
  • If no action is taken, UPI access will be suspended for those numbers.
  • UPI services can be reinstated if users update their active number before the deadline.

🚫 Who Will Be Affected?

  • Users who changed their number but didn’t update it with their bank or UPI app.
  • Those with numbers that haven’t been used for calls, SMS, or banking alerts.
  • Individuals who surrendered their mobile numbers without notifying the bank.
  • People whose old number is now reassigned to someone else.

✅ How To Ensure Continued UPI Access

  • Call or message someone to check if your mobile number is active.
  • Ensure you receive OTP and SMS alerts from your bank.
  • Update your UPI-linked number using:
    • Net banking
    • UPI apps
    • ATMs
    • Bank branch visit

📲 Why Your Mobile Number Is Critical

Your mobile number is your primary verification point in the UPI system. An inactive number can result in transaction failures or, worse, money being routed to unintended accounts.

⏰ Deadline Reminder:
To avoid losing UPI access, update your mobile number with your bank before April 1, 2025.
