WhatsApp Launches AI-Powered Chat Summaries: Here’s How It Works
June 27, 2025 — Meta-owned WhatsApp has introduced a brand-new AI-powered feature that promises to make catching up on chats significantly easier. The feature, called Message Summaries, uses artificial intelligence to generate concise bullet-point summaries of unread personal messages — a relief for users overwhelmed by chat overload.
Currently being rolled out in the United States, the feature is expected to reach other regions and languages later this year, according to Meta.
“We’re excited to introduce Message Summaries, a new option that uses Meta AI to privately and quickly summarise unread messages in a chat,” WhatsApp said in an official release.
The AI summaries are activated by tapping the “unread messages” button within a chat. Once enabled, Meta AI provides a quick overview of key points from the unread messages, helping users decide what to focus on without reading through everything.

Meta describes this as a confidential computing infrastructure that allows AI to operate in a secure cloud environment. It processes tasks like chat summarisation and writing suggestions without exposing the user’s data to unauthorized parties.
This move aligns with Meta’s broader push to integrate AI into its platforms, as seen over the past year with features like real-time image generation and in-chat Meta AI interactions.

In a related development, WhatsApp also confirmed plans to show ads in the Updates tab, mimicking Instagram’s ad placements. These ads will be based on user location, language, and followed channels.
WhatsApp is also monetising Channels via subscriptions and promotional tools, with payments managed through app stores.
