December 13, 2024: Vinod Kambli, once considered one of the brightest talents in Indian cricket, never quite lived up to his immense potential. While his career took a downward turn, his childhood friend and former teammate Sachin Tendulkar went on to become one of the greatest cricketers in history. The contrast in their lives was starkly visible when they reunited at the memorial of their coach, Ramakant Achrekar.

In a recent interview, Kambli reflected on his struggles with health and career setbacks. Kambli clarified his earlier statements and expressed gratitude toward Sachin for standing by him, especially during his medical emergencies.

“At that time, it came to my mind that Sachin didn’t help. I was extremely frustrated. But Sachin did everything for me, including paying for my two surgeries in 2013,” Kambli said on The Viky Lalwani Show. He added, “We spoke, and our childhood friendship came forward.”
Kambli also highlighted Tendulkar’s influence on his career, saying, “Sachin told me how to play. I made nine comebacks. We are cricketers; we get hurt. When we get out, we also get hurt.”
Despite his struggles, Kambli cherishes the milestones he achieved during his cricketing journey. He fondly recalled his double century at Wankhede in the 1990s, a defining moment in his career. “The double hundred at Wankhede, I will cherish the most. Achrekar sir was with me, and we had such a great team. I used to have fun battles with Muttiah Muralitharan and our other opponents,” Kambli shared.
Acknowledging the imperfections of his journey, Kambli expressed gratitude for the support he received from his family and friends, especially Tendulkar. “My journey wasn’t perfect, but I gave it my all. I’m grateful for the support of my family and friends like Sachin,” he concluded.
