October 10,2024: Sri Lanka has announced its squad for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies, with Bhanuka Rajapaksa making his return to the side and former skipper Dasun Shanaka being left out.
Rajapaksa, despite having inconsistent form lately, brings explosive potential to Sri Lanka’s middle-order, which could prove vital in the series. His recent performances in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) were modest, but his ability to finish innings strongly remains a key asset for the team.
On the other hand, Chamindu Wickramasinghe, a promising 22-year-old all-rounder, has retained his place after debuting during Sri Lanka’s series against India. Notably, Dilshan Madushanka has missed out, and Dushmantha Chameera continues to recover from an injury that has sidelined him since July.
The spin department will be bolstered by the return of star spinner Wanindu Hasaranga, who has recovered from the hamstring injury that kept him out during the ODI series against India. Alongside him, leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay, who impressed in recent ODIs, has also made the cut.
The squad features a strong pace attack with Matheesha Pathirana, Nuwan Thushara, Binura Fernando, and Asitha Fernando, providing plenty of options in the bowling department. Veteran batter Dinesh Chandimal retains his spot, despite limited appearances in T20Is recently, owing to his performances in the longer formats.
The T20I series will begin on Sunday at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, with two more matches following on October 15 and 17.
