Director Lakshmipriya Devi’s film ‘Boong’ is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2024. The film tells the story of a young boy named Boong from Manipur, who plans to surprise his mother with the gift of bringing his father back home. His quest leads to an unexpected and heartwarming conclusion, marking a new beginning.

Drawing inspiration from her own experiences, Devi shared, “This narrative organically developed while seeking closure from a difficult part of my childhood in Manipur, a place I call home in the northeastern corner of India.” ‘Boong’ marks Devi’s directorial debut after working as a First Assistant Director on films such as ‘Luck by Chance’, ‘Talaash’, ‘PK’, and ‘A Suitable Boy’.

Produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment, and Suitable Pictures, ‘Boong’ will have its world premiere in the Discovery section at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival, scheduled for September 5-15, 2024.

Other notable films premiering at TIFF 2024 include Angelina Jolie’s war film ‘Without Blood’, a documentary about Bruce Springsteen, and Mike Leigh’s contemporary tragicomedy ‘Hard Truths’. The festival will also feature new films from stars like Alicia Vikander, Lupita Nyong’o, Steve Coogan, Ralph Fiennes, Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Lily James, and Riz Ahmed.

This year, TIFF will present a mix of films that debuted at Cannes and Venice, alongside high-profile world premieres, at venues such as Roy Thomson Hall, TIFF Bell Lightbox, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and the Scotiabank Theatre. The festival, running from September 5 to 15, will open with Ben Stiller’s comedy ‘Nutcrackers’, directed by David Gordon Green, and close with Rebel Wilson’s musical comedy ‘The Deb’, set in rural Australia. These selections continue TIFF’s tradition of featuring mainstream crowd-pleasers to bookend the event.
