Domestic help accuses Haryana IPS officer of work harassment

A 23-year-old Assamese domestic worker has accused an IPS officer of bonded labour and torture in Haryana’s Panchkula.

According to the worker, who is from Mangaldoi in Assam, she was abused excessively at the Panchkula residence of the serving IPS officer and his wife between March 2021 and February this year. She is currently being treated at the Safdarjung Hospital in the national capital after allegedly suffering serious injuries.

On February 8, Delhi Police filed a Zero FIR at Fatehpur Beri Police Station under multiple Indian Penal Code (IPC) offences, including unlawful compulsory labour, theft, wrongful detention, and causing harm. The worker’s family lives in Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri neighbourhood. The matter has now been handed over to the Panchkula Police Department.

The domestic worker described how she was tormented because she reportedly failed to meet her employers’ “expectations” at work.

Domestic worker says, “The beatings used to last for hours, and I wouldn’t often be able to wake up for work the next day. Then it would repeat again,”
