Emmy-nominated actor Elizabeth Debicki, who portrayed Princess Diana in the final two seasons of the acclaimed series The Crown, believes the show concluded at the perfect juncture.
In an interview with People, Debicki shared her thoughts on the series’ conclusion, stating, “I think it ended in the right place, really,” and added, “It always kind of knew where it was going, and then I think there was a sense from the writing from creator Peter Morgan as well, that it understood its end in a way. It’s very delicate, I think.”
The Crown, created by Peter Morgan, is a historical drama that chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Debicki praised Morgan’s ability to wrap up the series gracefully, describing it as “an enormous journey” for viewers, one that needed to conclude appropriately after six seasons. “When you commit to watching six seasons of a show, you need it to end properly,” she emphasized.
Portraying the late Princess Diana, Debicki reflected on her role in the series, particularly the delicate handling of Diana’s final days before her tragic death in 1997. She remarked, “I thought it was very respectful, and I know that the depth and degree of conversation around how to end the series was immense.”
Debicki is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama at the 2024 Emmys for her role in The Crown, competing against notable actresses like Christine Baranski and Greta Lee. Reflecting on the show’s 18 Emmy nominations, Debicki expressed her joy, saying, “I was so thrilled that so many of us have been nominated. That just feels like the cherry on the cake, really.”
As The Crown comes to a close, Debicki’s portrayal of Princess Diana leaves a lasting impact on the series, cementing her place in what she describes as a “long and beautiful — but sometimes really challenging — chapter” of her acting career. All six seasons of The Crown are now available for streaming on Netflix.
