Emily Blunt Recalls Her Most Challenging Stunt from ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

Published:

Emily Blunt, renowned for her dynamic range in film genres from intense action thrillers to heartfelt romances, has proven her prowess in action with standout performances in films like ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and ‘Sicario’. However, it was a scene from a very different kind of movie that Blunt described as the scariest stunt of her career.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Blunt opened up about the daunting task of descending from the clouds in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’. “I did some wire stuff in Edge of Tomorrow, which was probably more dangerous, because I took some spills,” Blunt shared. “Mary Poppins Returns on the other hand? That entrance was very stressful for me,” she added, highlighting the contrast between the physical dangers of her action roles and the psychological pressure of living up to an iconic role.

Taking on the mantle from Julie Andrews in the 2018 Disney musical sequel, Blunt faced unique challenges, especially during her character’s magical entrance. She explained the technicalities, saying, “The character’s entrance had to start in the clouds and come all the way down toward the ground while holding an umbrella aloft. And I’m supposed to walk effortlessly into my close-up as if it’s nothing.”

Reflecting further on the experience, Blunt recounted, “I did three takes — and then I felt my tolerance go, ‘Pfft!’ And that was it. I was done.” Despite the director Rob Marshall’s wish to go for a fourth take, Blunt stood her ground. “I did three takes and I could see Rob gearing up to do another one. I was like, ‘Nope, no, no, no, I’m done.’ It was over,” she recalled.

Blunt continues to garner acclaim for her versatile acting abilities, most recently being praised for her role in ‘The Fall Guy’, featuring alongside Ryan Gosling. Her ability to tackle complex stunts and bring depth to a variety of characters cements her status as one of Hollywood’s most talented and fearless actresses.
