🎬 Subhash Ghai on Bollywood’s Decline: “I Stopped Making Films”, “Actors Are No Longer Artists, They Are Brands”

Veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai laments the shift in Bollywood, criticizing the industry’s transactional approach to storytelling and lack of creative passion.

March 11, 2025: Legendary filmmaker Subhash Ghai, known for classics like Khalnayak, Pardes, Taal, and Ram Lakhan, has opened up about why he stopped making films. In a candid conversation on the YouTube channel Game Changers, Ghai expressed his disappointment with the current state of Bollywood, where filmmaking has become just another job rather than an artistic passion.

Ghai revealed that he lost motivation to direct films after witnessing how the industry has prioritized commercialism over creativity. He shared an incident where he approached a writer with a film idea but was met with a mechanical, deadline-driven response.

“I gave an idea to a writer and asked him to develop a story. He told me he’d finish it in 15 days, deliver the first draft in three days, and even demanded his full fee upfront. He gave me exact dates—when the story would be ready. I asked him, ‘Tu rotiyan paka raha hai? (Are you making chapatis?)’ How can I work with someone like that?” Ghai lamented.

đŸ“± “Scripts Are Being Written on WhatsApp Now”

Criticizing the lack of genuine storytelling, Ghai noted how scripts and dialogues are now being written over WhatsApp, making the process purely transactional.

“They say, ‘Just send it over email, that is enough.’ These days, people are writing scripts and dialogues on WhatsApp,” he remarked, highlighting the decline of creative collaboration in filmmaking.

Ghai also pointed out how actors today focus more on being brands rather than true performers. He believes that this mindset has resulted in a lack of new superstars in Bollywood over the past decade.

“That’s why the actors from the 80s—Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Aamir Khan—are still superstars. They came from a different culture. In the last 10 years, who became a true star? No one except Ranbir Kapoor,” he stated.

Ghai’s words resonate with the growing sentiment that Bollywood has lost its artistic soul, with commercial success often taking precedence over storytelling. His remarks have sparked widespread debate about the state of creativity in the Hindi film industry.
