Danny Boyle’s Highly Anticipated Horror Sequel Hits Digital Platforms Today. Find Out When You Can Stream It For Free On Netflix After Its Premium Release

July 29, 2025: Fans of the popular “28 Years Later” series may now see the newest movie, “28 Years Later,” from the comfort of their own homes. The highly anticipated horror sequel, directed by original team member Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, is now available for purchase and rental on digital platforms just 37 days after it opened in theaters.

“28 Years Later” is already available on digital platforms and should be free to stream on Netflix by the end of the year.
“28 Years Later” takes place almost 30 years after the events of “28 Weeks Later,” which came out in 2007. It takes viewers back to a world dealing with the consequences of the Rage virus outbreak. The movie features a new group of people who are trying to stay alive while dealing with the constant threat of the infected. Isla, a woman who is losing her memory, is played by Jodie Comer. Jamie, her husband and a dedicated scavenger, is played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding are featured in the cast.

The movie did well at the box office, making more than $150 million throughout the world. Now, Sony Pictures wants to make even more money with its premium video-on-demand (PVOD) release.

Digital Release Information: “28 Years Later” could be bought or rented digitally starting at 12 a.m. Eastern Time (9 p.m. Pacific Time) on Tuesday, July 29. People can watch the movie on big digital stores like Amazon Prime, Apple TV, and Fandango At Home. Prices may be different on different platforms. For example, on Amazon Prime, you may rent the movie for $19.99 (with a 48-hour viewing window after playing starts) or buy it for $24.99.

Upcoming Netflix viewing: “28 Years Later” is not yet available for free viewing on any subscription service, although it is expected to be available on Netflix in the next several months, probably before the end of 2025. This assumption comes from Sony’s exclusive “Pay 1” output arrangement with Netflix. This deal gives Netflix the first streaming window for Sony’s movies when they come out on home media.

“28 Years Later” could start streaming on Netflix around the end of September 2025, based on how other recent Sony movies have been released. For example, “Kraven the Hunter” came out on Netflix about three months after it came out in theaters, and “One of Them Days” came out on Netflix two and a half months later. This would let all Netflix subscribers watch it for free.

In the meantime, those who want to keep the Rage virus story going can buy or rent “28 Years Later” online.
