The actor-producer calls it his “biggest ambition” and plans to launch an ambitious cinematic universe with multiple directors
New Delhi | April 22, 2025 — After years of speculation and quiet planning, Aamir Khan has officially confirmed that he is moving forward with his long-dreamed Mahabharata adaptation — an epic franchise on a Lord of the Rings-style scale.
In an exclusive with The Hollywood Reporter India, Aamir said, “It is one of my biggest ambitions. The writing process alone will take a few years.” The project will reportedly begin development later this year.
🎥 A Multiverse Approach to Mahabharata
While Aamir remained tight-lipped on whether he’ll act in the series, he made it clear that his primary role will be as a producer. Casting, he said, will be based solely on who suits the character best — hinting at a performance-first approach rather than star power.
Aamir also revealed that the vast scale of the Mahabharata may require multiple directors working across different units, similar to how Peter Jackson executed the Lord of the Rings trilogy. “If we do it sequentially, it will take far too long. We might need to shoot multiple parts simultaneously,” he said.
🛕 More Than Just a Film: A Sacred Responsibility
This isn’t the first time Aamir has spoken about the gravity of adapting India’s greatest epic. Back in 2022 during Laal Singh Chaddha promotions, he famously said:
“When you are making a film on Mahabharata, you are performing a yagya… it is not just a film. Mahabharata will never let you down, but you may let down Mahabharata.”
🎞️ A Long-Awaited Dream, Back on Track
Rumours about Aamir’s Mahabharata began circulating as early as 2018, with reports suggesting a staggering budget of ₹1,000 crore or more. The actor even turned down a few big-ticket projects to focus on the scripting and research for this venture.
In a previous interview, filmmaker SS Rajamouli also revealed that he had discussions with Aamir regarding Mahabharata — further heightening anticipation for a project that may rival global franchises in both scale and emotional depth.
🌟 What’s Next for Aamir?
Before the Mahabharata saga kicks off, Aamir Khan will return to acting in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par, scheduled for release in Summer 2025. Describing his role, he said the character is “rude and politically incorrect,” promising a dramatic shift from his earlier emotional portrayals.
