Aamir Khan Joins Supreme Court Screening of 'Laapata Ladies' in Honor of Gender Equality
On Friday, actor Aamir Khan attended a special screening of his film Laapata Ladies at the Supreme Court of India as part of a gender sensitization program. The event, held in the apex court’s auditorium, was part of the activities commemorating the 75th year of the Supreme Court’s establishment.
Before the screening, Aamir Khan took a seat in the front row of the court and observed the proceedings for about 30 minutes. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud warmly welcomed the actor, stating, “I don’t want a stampede in the court, but we welcome Mr. Aamir Khan who is here for the screening of the film.” The Chief Justice’s light-hearted comment was met with smiles and appreciation from those present.
Attorney General R Venkataramani, who was appearing in one of the matters, also noted the star presence, humorously commenting, “It’s a star-studded court today.”
Kiran Rao, the film’s director, also attended the proceedings before the screening. Expressing her gratitude, Rao said, “Am deeply honoured,” adding that it was a privilege to have her film screened as part of the Supreme Court’s 75th-anniversary activities.
The screening was exclusively organized for the judges of the Supreme Court, their spouses, and members of the court’s registry. The film Laapata Ladies, which revolves around the theme of gender equality, had earlier premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September 2023, where it received a standing ovation.
The Supreme Court’s circular about the event read, “As part of the activities organized during the seventy-fifth year of the establishment of the Supreme Court of India, the movie ‘Laapata Ladies’, which is based on the theme of gender equality, will be screened on Friday, August 9, 2024, in the Auditorium, C-Block, Administrative Building Complex. Kiran Rao, who has directed the movie, and Aamir Khan, the producer, will also be present during the screening.”
