Actor recalls thinking the film was “terrible” and a cop’s brutally honest reaction

January 13, 2026: At a recent Delhi Belly fan meet in Mumbai, attended by Imran Khan and Vir Das, Aamir Khan revisited memories from the film’s early days and shared a candid anecdote about its first cut. Aamir revealed that when he watched the initial test screening, he was convinced the film was a disaster. “I was watching it for the first time and thought, ‘Bahut buri film banayi hai yaar… alag level buri bani hai,’” he said, recalling how the humour and excessive abuse felt completely off at that stage.

Aamir went on to narrate a moment that left everyone laughing. After the screening, he asked a police officer from his security team for feedback. The cop’s response was brutally honest. “Sir, pichhle 25 saalon mein jo aapne naam kamaya hai, wo aap ye ek film mein gawane wale ho,” the officer told him, warning that the film could ruin his reputation. Aamir admitted that such reactions are common with first cuts, especially when comedy does not land as intended.

The actor added that the team later revisited the film, reworked it carefully, and managed to fix what wasn’t working. Interestingly, the cop’s blunt remark even inspired a line in the film’s teaser, where Imran Khan warns viewers, “Mamu apni saari izzat gawane wale hain.” Delhi Belly eventually went on to become a cult hit, proving how drastically a film can evolve from its first cut to the final version.
