Aamir Khan on Laapataa Ladies’ Oscar Dream: “India Would Go Ballistic If We Win”

December 17, 2024: With Laapataa Ladies being chosen as India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025, all eyes are now on Aamir Khan’s production. In a candid conversation with BBC News India, Aamir shared his thoughts on the importance of an Academy Award for the country and the euphoria it would create.

Aamir Khan on the Oscars’ Impact

When asked what winning an Oscar would mean for him, Aamir Khan expressed optimism about the platform it offers. He said,
“It would create tremendous opportunity for the film to be seen by a lot more people because when a film wins an Oscar or Academy Award, then people from around the world want to see what it’s like. So it opens a huge window of opportunity for a larger audience.”

Aamir also emphasized how deeply invested Indians are in films and their longing for international recognition:
“Indians are so film crazy, and we have been dying to win an Academy Award for an Indian film, which hasn’t happened till now. So the country would go ballistic. They’ll just go mad if we win. Just for the people of our country, I’d be very happy if we win the award.”

India’s Oscars History

India has had only three films nominated in the Best International Feature Film category:

  1. Mother India
  2. Salaam Bombay
  3. Lagaan (also starring Aamir Khan).

While none of these films secured a win, Indian cinema has celebrated recent victories with RRR’s Best Original Song and The Elephant WhisperersBest Documentary Short. Films like Writing with Fire and All That Breathes have also received nods in the documentary category. With Laapataa Ladies, expectations are soaring high for another milestone moment in Indian cinema.

The Oscars shortlist for 2025 is set to be revealed on December 17, 2024, heightening the excitement around Aamir Khan’s film.

Aamir Khan’s Upcoming Projects

On the work front, Aamir Khan is gearing up for his next film Sitaare Zameen Par, reuniting with Darsheel Safary alongside Genelia Deshmukh. The film is slated for release in 2025. Additionally, Aamir is producing Rajkumar Santoshi’s Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol.
