Aamir Khan, R Madhavan Clear The Air On 3 Idiots Sequel

The “OG Idiots” address viral reports of a sequel titled 4 Idiots; Madhavan calls the idea “far-fetched” while Aamir admits he hasn’t been approached.

December 31, 2025: Sixteen years after Rajkumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots changed the landscape of Indian cinema, the internet has been ablaze with rumors of a long-awaited sequel. However, in a series of exclusive clarifications on Monday, December 29, 2025, lead actors Aamir Khan and R. Madhavan have effectively put the brakes on the hype train.

Madhavan: “It Sounds Far-Fetched”

In a candid conversation with veteran journalist Subhash K. Jha, R. Madhavan—who is currently riding high on the success of his latest thriller Dhurandhar—expressed major doubts about returning to the classroom.

  • The Reality Check: “A sequel to 3 Idiots sounds great, but it also sounds far-fetched. All three of us—Aamir, Sharman [Joshi], and I—are much older now. Where do we go in the sequel?”
  • The Verdict: While expressing his desire to work with “Raju Sir” (Rajkumar Hirani) again, Madhavan didn’t mince words about the brand: “But 3 Idiots again? I think that would be idiotic.”

Aamir Khan: “Rancho is My Most Popular Role”

Aamir Khan, whose character Rancho remains a cultural icon, echoed Madhavan’s sentiment regarding the lack of official movement, though he appeared more open to the idea.

  • No Offer Yet: “We had so much fun making that film!7 People still talk about Rancho. So yeah, I’d love to do a sequel, but no one has approached me.”
  • Rumor vs. Reality: Reports had recently claimed Hirani had “locked the script” and was eyeing a June 2026 start date, but Aamir’s statement confirms that no contracts have been signed.

The “4 Idiots” Speculation

The rumors gained momentum following reports that the sequel would be titled 4 Idiots and would introduce a new lead alongside the original trio.

  • The “Phalke” Delay: Industry insiders suggested that Rajkumar Hirani shifted focus back to the 3 Idiots universe only after his ambitious Dadasaheb Phalke biopic with Aamir Khan was reportedly put on hold for script re-work.
  • Sharman’s Take: Earlier this week, Sharman Joshi (Raju Rastogi) shared his cautious optimism: “The last time reports came, it turned out to be for an ad campaign.12 Hopefully, this time it’s true.”
