Aamir Khan Reflects on His Divorces: “We Didn’t Part Ways Happily….”

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, known for his candid approach to life and cinema, has opened up about his divorces from Reena Dutta and Kiran Rao, calling the experience emotionally painful but rooted in truth. In an interview with Zoom while promoting his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, Khan shared that, although separating was difficult, he couldn’t lie to the world or himself by pretending everything was perfect.

“Marriage is a very serious institution in India. When a marriage ends, people don’t like it—and rightly so,” Aamir said, acknowledging the societal lens around divorce. “But we didn’t take the decision lightly. It wasn’t something we did cheerfully.”

Aamir explained that despite mutual respect and affection, the changing dynamics in both his marriages made it impossible to continue.

“It is a loss for us and our families. Reena and I couldn’t continue being married. Nor could Kiran and I. It’s not a happy thing. But I didn’t want to lie and pretend that we’re happy just to save face,” he said.

A Legacy of Truth and Co-Parenting

Khan married Reena Dutta in 1986 and shares two children with her—Junaid and Ira. Their marriage ended in 2002. He then married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, with whom he has a son, Azad. They separated in 2021 but continue to co-parent.

“There are times when circumstances change and you have to accept that. It’s better to be truthful than live a lie,” he said, further adding that divorces should not be romanticized, but also not hidden in shame.

On his 60th birthday earlier this year, Aamir introduced his girlfriend, Gauri Spratt, to the media. Since then, the couple has made several public appearances, with Aamir seemingly finding stability again in his personal life.
