Aamir Khan Reveals Why He Turned Down The Iconic Role In Yash Chopra’s ‘Darr’

March 9, 2025: In a candid revelation, Aamir Khan recently shared that he was originally offered the iconic antagonist role in Yash Chopra’s classic film Darr but ultimately decided to back out from the project. The film, which became a turning point in Shah Rukh Khan’s career, is considered one of the most influential films in Indian cinema. Shah Rukh Khan went on to portray the obsessive lover, Rahul Mehra, opposite Juhi Chawla, a role that cemented his status as the King of Bollywood.

During a press conference for the Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar film festival, Aamir Khan opened up about why he didn’t take on the role in Darr. The actor explained that while he was initially offered the role, it was for reasons unrelated to creativity that he chose not to take the project. Aamir elaborated that the tone of the character that Yash Chopra envisioned for Darr suited Shah Rukh Khan better, and in retrospect, he believes it was the right decision.

Aamir further added, “I don’t really regret it because I think the film was well made and successful. If I had done it, something else would have happened because I was looking at it differently. But I think Shah Rukh was a better fit for that particular role.”

The Sarfarosh actor also shared an interesting anecdote about Bajrangi Bhaijaan. Aamir revealed that after reading the script of the blockbuster film, he had advised writer V. Vijayendra Prasad to cast Salman Khan in the lead role, believing that Salman would suit the character better. This candid sharing of experiences gave fans a glimpse into Aamir’s thought process and his selfless approach to the success of Indian cinema.

The conversation took place during the press launch of the Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar film festival, which will take place from March 14 to March 27, coinciding with Aamir Khan’s birthday. The festival will showcase some of Aamir’s most iconic performances on the big screen, offering fans a chance to relive his cinematic legacy.

The event also saw a heartwarming moment when legendary lyricist Javed Akhtar, who has had a long-standing professional relationship with Aamir, recalled the actor’s early days. Javed shared that Aamir’s first film, Faryaaz, was produced and written by him. He further revealed that he had immediately recognized Aamir’s star potential when they first met, advising that he should start his career with a romantic film. Javed also shared that his son Farhan Akhtar’s first film also starred Aamir, underscoring their longstanding professional bond.

The Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar festival is expected to draw significant attention from fans and movie lovers, celebrating Aamir Khan’s contribution to Indian cinema and the incredible legacy he has built throughout his career.
