May 27, 2025: Bollywood icon Aamir Khan is gearing up for a major comeback with ‘Sitaare Zameen Par’, the spiritual sequel to his critically acclaimed Taare Zameen Par (2007). But while the return of Bollywood’s so-called Mr. Perfectionist has generated curiosity, his latest move regarding the film’s release strategy has stirred considerable controversy online.

According to a report, once the film finishes its theatrical run, it will not release on traditional OTT platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, or Hotstar. Instead, Sitaare Zameen Par will be available exclusively on YouTube Pay-Per-View—meaning viewers will have to pay separately to watch the film, even if they already subscribe to major streaming platforms.

Netizens React: “This Is Not It, Chief”

The response on social media has been swift and scathing, with many calling out what they see as an elitist or ill-conceived decision. Some felt it was unjustified given the film’s alleged lack of originality:

  • Ideally Aamir’s new model should be making an original movie,” one user quipped.
  • Another comment read, “Not like it’s an original story—just a copy-paste of the English version.
  • I don’t think Aamir realises that he does not have a hardcore fan base. People are bored of him.

Some users also compared the situation to Laal Singh Chaddha (2022), Aamir’s last release, which was both a box office and critical failure, and criticized his attempt to shake up the distribution model without first delivering truly compelling content.

A Power Play or a Misstep?

According to the report, this unusual release plan is part of a “power play” to allow Aamir and the producers greater control over pricing, release windows, and viewer data—possibly as a way to reduce dependence on OTT giants and retain more direct revenue.

While the model may have worked for global megastars with loyal fanbases or franchise-heavy blockbusters, netizens argue Aamir no longer commands that level of pull, especially after a series of underwhelming performances and controversies.

About the Film

  • Directed by RS Prasanna
  • Also stars Genelia Deshmukh
  • Inspired by the Spanish sports dramedy Champions (2018)
  • Releasing in theatres on June 20

Whether the film’s emotional storyline and Aamir’s signature sincerity can override these early criticisms remains to be seen. But for now, Sitaare Zameen Par is already polarising audiences—before it even hits the screen.
