Despite a green signal from UK censors, Aamir Khan has put the Indian release of Sitaare Zameen Par on hold as he challenges the CBFC’s demand to delete scenes he deems “integral to the film’s soul.”
June 17, 2025: Aamir Khan’s much-anticipated comeback film Sitaare Zameen Par, initially slated for a June 20 release, is now facing uncertainty in India. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has requested two specific cuts in the movie, but the actor-producer has refused to comply, citing artistic integrity.

According to insiders from the production unit, Aamir is firm on his stance that every frame in the film serves a purpose — either narratively or thematically — and removing any of them would “dilute the emotional core and social commentary of the film.”
🎬 Creative Clash with CBFC
The CBFC reportedly objected to two scenes — one involving discrimination-based dialogue and another with mild sexual overtones, which were found “inappropriate for general Indian audiences.” However, Aamir disagrees.
“He believes the film is not just entertainment — it’s a message. A removal of these scenes would be a compromise on truth,” a source close to Aamir Khan Productions told reporters.
Khan now intends to meet CBFC officials personally to present his case. This rare move highlights just how critical the scenes are to the storytelling vision that Sitaare Zameen Par carries.
🇬🇧 UK Clears the Film Without Cuts
While the Indian board remains in a stalemate with Aamir, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has already cleared the film with a 12A rating, allowing it to be viewed by children under 12 when accompanied by an adult.
The BBFC noted that the film “contains references to discrimination and mild sexual content,” but found it suitable for general viewing with parental guidance.
This international greenlight places even more pressure on the CBFC to reconsider its position, especially as Indian audiences grow increasingly exposed to global cinematic standards.

Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by R.S. Prasanna, is produced by Aamir Khan and Aparna Purohit, and stars Aamir Khan alongside Genelia Deshmukh. The movie is described as a spiritual successor to Khan’s 2007 classic Taare Zameen Par.
It is also an official remake of the Spanish film Campeones (2018), and tells the story of a suspended basketball coach who is ordered to train a team of players with disabilities as part of his community service.
