July 12, 2025: R Madhavan makes a much-awaited return to romantic comedy with Netflix India’s latest direct-to-OTT release Aap Jaisa Koi, directed by Vivek Soni. Released on July 11, the film marks Madhavan’s return to the genre after nearly a decade—his last being the widely loved Tanu Weds Manu: Returns in 2015.

Also starring Fatima Sana Shaikh, the film has already generated buzz across social media for its fresh storytelling, standout performances, and a nuanced portrayal of middle-aged love in a conservative society.

Produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions under its OTT content studio banner, Aap Jaisa Koi centers around Shrirenu Tripathi (Madhavan), a reserved Sanskrit teacher from Jamshedpur, who unexpectedly falls in love with Madhu Bose (Fatima Sana Shaikh), a lively French teacher from Kolkata. Their relationship, however, is tested by family expectations, generational divides, and the harsh gaze of societal norms.

Early reactions on X (formerly Twitter) have been overwhelmingly positive.

“Just watched Aap Jaisa Koi Nahi and I’m speechless. What a stunning film—beautifully written, brilliantly directed, and soulfully performed by every actor. A must-watch for every man to truly understand the weight of patriarchy and a woman’s voice,” wrote one user.

Another viewer highlighted the emotional depth of the film, quoting a line from it:

“Akela insaan chaahe khush ho ya dukhi, ek jaisa lagta hai” (A person who is alone, whether happy or sad, looks the same). “This line broke me,” they added.

Ayesha Raza, part of the supporting cast, is earning particular praise for her performance, with one post stating:

“Everything is great but Ayesha Raza wins this round.”

From original music to striking visuals, audiences have lauded the film’s attention to detail.

“Finally, some original soundtracks in this era of forgettable remixes,” noted one user.

The film also doesn’t shy away from confronting social issues. Viewers celebrated how it tackled themes of love, aging, loneliness, and patriarchy without preaching.

“Love simply needs love—Pyaar ko sirf pyaar hi chahiye hota hai,” one post summarized.

While a few users mentioned pacing issues in the latter half, most agree that the film delivers an impactful, heartfelt story.

With its balance of romance, cultural commentary, and emotional depth, Aap Jaisa Koi is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about OTT releases of the year.
