“They tried to keep us away from the glamour and the limelight,” Abhay said. “They wanted us to have as normal a childhood as possible. Our parents made a conscious decision to shield us from the industry during our early years.”

The Socha Na Tha actor shared that while he lived in a joint family with his two sisters and four cousins, he wasn’t always included in his older cousins’ inner circle. “I was the youngest. So, yes, they babied me—but they didn’t really want me around because I was annoying,” he laughed. “Sunny and Bobby were much closer to each other. I wasn’t around them as much as my sisters were, and they still remain very close.”

Abhay’s upbringing was a mix of indulgence and distance. Despite the famous surname, the actor recalled that his parents, especially his mother and father, were very rooted. “They came straight from a village to Bombay. I compare them to the Beverly Hillbillies—The Bollywood Hillbillies,” he joked. “They’re very grounded and proud of their community.”

Though part of a legendary film legacy, Abhay Deol has carved a niche for himself with offbeat roles and independent films, consistently staying away from mainstream Bollywood pressures—perhaps a reflection of the grounded, no-frills upbringing he so fondly recalls.
