Actor-Politician Kamal Haasan Takes Oath as Rajya Sabha MP

Veteran Actor-Politician Joins Upper House. MNM Chief Starts New Chapter with DMK’s Support

July 25, 2025: Today, Kamal Haasan, a long-time actor and politician who leads the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party, took the oath of office as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha.

This was the beginning of a new phase in his political career. Haasan took his oath in Tamil, which indicates how much he cares about his language and culture.

Since he started the MNM party on February 21, 2018, this is Haasan’s first official post in Parliament. Many people believe that the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is letting him into the Upper House as a way to say thank you for MNM’s aid in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The DMK is in charge of the Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which did very well in Tamil Nadu. They won all 39 seats in the state legislature.

It was known that Haasan was running for the Rajya Sabha seat not long after MNM joined the SPA in March 2024. Before the key Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in 2026, this choice was helpful for the alliance’s plan. MNM campaigned for 37 seats in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but didn’t win any. They garnered roughly 4% of the votes. They ran for 180 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections of 2021, but only got 2.62% of the vote. Haasan almost lost the Coimbatore South seat. The party didn’t contest for office in the 2024 general elections. Instead, they fully backed the DMK-led alliance.

His party made the announcement official by saying, “We are happy to let you know that Kamal Haasan will take the oath of office and start his duties in Parliament on July 25.”

People who are interested in politics think that Haasan’s joining the Rajya Sabha will make it stronger and offer it a smart, well-spoken voice. People recognize him as a great promoter of education, a scientific style of thinking, and excellent administration. People think he would start a national discourse about these things. People are really looking forward to his debut speech in the Rajya Sabha. They hope it will show how smart, busy, and demanding he is when it comes to advancement that encompasses everyone.

People think that Haasan’s ascension to Parliament is a big political event that brings together movies, social issues, and civic duty on both the state and national levels.
