During a candid interaction in Azerbaijan, the India-based singer echoed long-held criticism of Pakistan’s military establishment
May 5, 2025: Singer Adnan Sami, who renounced Pakistani citizenship in 2016 to become an Indian national, shared a striking encounter with young Pakistani men during a recent visit to Baku, Azerbaijan. According to Sami, the group expressed frustration over the state of their country and the role of its military, saying they “hate our army” and aspire to change their citizenship—comments that sparked a sharp response from the outspoken singer.
“They said, ‘Sir, you are very lucky. You left Pakistan at a good time. We also want to change our citizenship. We hate our army. They have destroyed our country!’ I replied, ‘I knew this long ago!’” Sami wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

🇮🇳 From Pakistan to India: Adnan Sami’s Journey
Born in the UK to a Pakistani father and Indian mother, Adnan Sami moved to India in 2001. After years of residency and musical contributions, he was granted Indian citizenship in 2016. Since then, he has been vocal in criticizing Pakistan’s military and establishment, often clashing with Pakistani public figures on social media.
The singer’s post came in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, where 26 civilians were killed, prompting India to cancel visas issued to Pakistani nationals and take diplomatic and strategic steps against Pakistan. Sami had condemned the attack, calling it a “horrific crime against humanity.”

💬 Social Media Clash With Fawad Chaudhry
In a heated exchange online, former Pakistani Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry indirectly questioned India’s move by tweeting, “What about Adnan Sami?”—a jab referring to Sami’s origin.
Sami’s blunt response:
“Who’s going to tell this illiterate idiot!”
In a separate post, he lashed out again, calling Chaudhry a “dumba**” and clarifying his ancestry:
“My roots are from Peshawar, not Lahore… To think that you were Minister of (Mis) Information and have no knowledge about any information!”
🗣️ “I Have No Contempt for the People of Pakistan”
In 2022, Sami had clarified that his criticism was not of the Pakistani public, but of its establishment:
“Those who truly know me will also know what that establishment did to me for many years… One day, I will expose the reality… It will shock many.”
Sami has long maintained that his decision to leave Pakistan was fueled by maltreatment by the state apparatus, despite enjoying popularity as a musician.
