After Indian 2 and Kanguva Flops, Tamil Producers Blame Critics, Demand 3-Day Review Ban
December 4, 2024: The Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA) has moved the Madras High Court seeking a three-day embargo on movie reviews after theatrical releases. The petition, which highlights the damaging effects of early negative reviews, is set to be heard by Justice S. Sounthar on December 3.
The association cited recent box office failures of big-budget films, including Kanguva, Indian 2, and Vettaiyan, as examples of how “tasteless” reviews have hindered their financial success.
Through its lawyer Vijayan Subramanian, TFAPA requested both central and state governments to implement regulations for online film critics, including those on social media. The association argued that reviews posted immediately after First Day First Show (FDFS) screenings often spread “personal malice” and negatively impact box office collections.
Previously, the Tamil Nadu Producers Council had also criticized YouTube reviewers for inciting hatred and making personal attacks, calling for a ban on them entering theatres. A letter from the council emphasized that while critics have the right to review films, they must avoid planting unnecessary hatred. “Criticism should not stem from personal grudges, and it’s vital for all industry associations to take collective action against such practices,” the council stated.
The association hopes that restricting reviews for three days post-release will give films a fair chance to perform without premature negative perceptions influencing audiences.
