The 2025 Cannes Film Festival also marked a historic year for Indian cinema:

  • Neeraj Ghaywan’s Homebound was featured in the Un Certain Regard section. Starring Ishaan Khatter, Vishal Jethwa, and Janhvi Kapoor, the film received a 9-minute standing ovation at its world premiere. The cast and crew also walked the red carpet and participated in the festival’s official photocall.
  • In the Cannes Classics segment, Satyajit Ray’s Aranyer Din Ratri received a special screening. Legendary cast members Sharmila Tagore and Simi Garewal were present, and the screening was introduced by director Wes Anderson. The film was restored with support from the Film Heritage Foundation and was met with a standing ovation.
  • Celebrated Indian filmmaker Payal Kapadia returned to Cannes as a member of the main competition jury, following her historic Grand Prix win in 2024 for her debut feature All We Imagine As Light, a joint India-France production.
