Reigning once again as the Queen of Cannes, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan stunned the red carpet in handwoven couture and heirloom jewels featuring Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds.

Cannes, May 22, 2025Aishwarya Rai Bachchan turned heads and hearts as she made her much-awaited red carpet appearance at the 78th Cannes Film Festival on May 21. The global style icon walked the red carpet for the screening of The History of Sound, wearing an opulent ivory Banarasi saree by Manish Malhotra—a vision of heritage, craftsmanship, and bold elegance.

Yet, it wasn’t just the saree that captivated the cameras. It was her jaw-dropping necklace that became the talk of the night.

500 Carats of Royalty: Mozambique Rubies & Uncut Diamonds

Manish Malhotra revealed that Aishwarya’s look was completed with high heirloom jewellery from his luxury collection, featuring an astonishing 500+ carats of Mozambique rubies and uncut diamonds, all mounted in 18-carat gold.

Her jewel ensemble included:

  • A multi-strand ruby necklace
  • A diamond and ruby choker with a solitaire pendant
  • A secondary diamond necklace
  • Statement ruby and diamond earrings
  • Two ruby-diamond rings, one on each hand

This exquisite combination brought a regal intensity to her otherwise minimalist silhouette.

Sari As Couture, Not Nostalgia

Aishwarya’s ensemble marked a deliberate design departure from typical red carpet fashion. Her ivory Banarasi saree, crafted using the Kadwa brocade technique from Varanasi, was handwoven with real chandi (silver) zari embroidery and featured brocade motifs, giving it unmatched depth and texture.

She layered the saree with a sheer white tissue dupatta, edged in gold and silver zardozi work, which swept gracefully behind her like a train—transforming tradition into theatrical couture.

“The ensemble reintroduces the saree not as nostalgia, but as contemporary couture,” said Manish Malhotra. “It’s a bold assertion redefining Indian ceremonial dress on the global stage.”

Beauty Notes: Sindoor & Red Lips in Cannes

Aishwarya’s makeup struck a perfect balance between heritage and high fashion.

  • Hair: Soft waves in a center part, adorned with sindoor, paying homage to marital symbolism
  • Makeup: Winged eyeliner, voluminous lashes, flushed cheeks, radiant highlighter, and bold red lips completed the look

Her presence on the carpet wasn’t just about elegance—it was a celebration of Indian identity and craftsmanship at a global fashion forum.

An Iconic Return

After two decades of representing India at Cannes, Aishwarya Rai continues to evolve while staying rooted. Her 2025 look was not just a fashion statement—it was a cultural moment.
