Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi Opens with ₹22 Crore: Falls Short of Thunivu and Valimai Day 1 Records

Despite mixed reviews and decent Tamil occupancy, Ajith’s latest action-drama lags behind the openings of his previous blockbusters.

February 7, 2025: Ajith Kumar’s Vidaamuyarchi Collects ₹22 Crore on Day 1, Trails Thunivu and Valimai Openings

After multiple delays, Ajith Kumar’s highly anticipated action-drama Vidaamuyarchi finally hit theatres on Thursday, February 6. Directed by Magizh Thirumeni, the film opened to mixed reviews but managed a respectable ₹22 crore at the Indian box office on its first day, according to industry tracker Sacnilk.

Box Office Performance: Tamil and Telugu Occupancy

Vidaamuyarchi, predominantly released in Tamil, witnessed an impressive 61.24% occupancy across 3,600 shows. The film also premiered in Telugu under the title Pattudala, but the response was lukewarm, with a lower occupancy of 12.82% across 800 shows nationwide.

Comparisons to Ajith’s Previous Releases

While Vidaamuyarchi has started strong, it trails behind the opening day collections of Ajith’s previous films. His 2023 release Thunivu grossed ₹28.6 crore on its first day, while the 2022 film Valimai raked in ₹31.7 crore.

Both Thunivu and Valimai were made on big budgets of ₹200 crore and ₹150 crore, respectively, and went on to earn ₹250 crore and ₹234 crore globally. In comparison, Vidaamuyarchi, reportedly made on a ₹200 crore budget, has yet to prove its mettle in the coming days.

Critical Response and Analysis

Critics have praised Vidaamuyarchi for its departure from traditional superstar-driven formulas. SCREEN’s Avinash Ramachandran highlighted, “Vidaamuyarchi showcases that when superstars like Ajith Kumar surrender to the director’s vision, the results are fascinating. While it’s no Mankatha or Viswasam, it doesn’t try to be, and that’s the point.”

The ensemble cast, including Arjun Sarja, Trisha Krishnan, Regina Cassandra, and Arav, has added depth to the narrative. However, the film’s experimental approach may have contributed to its polarizing reception.

With mixed reviews and competition from other releases, the next few days will be crucial in determining whether Vidaamuyarchi can sustain its momentum and deliver strong box office results.
