Alec Baldwin Files Malicious Prosecution Lawsuit After ‘Rust’ Case Dismissal

January 11, 2025: Alec Baldwin has filed a civil lawsuit against the prosecutors and investigators involved in his involuntary manslaughter trial, which was dismissed in July 2023. The actor, who faced charges related to the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of Rust, is seeking justice for what he claims was malicious prosecution and violations of his civil rights.

The lawsuit, filed on January 9 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, targets special prosecutor Kari Morrissey, Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies, and others involved in the case. Baldwin accuses them of wrongfully targeting him and attempting to “scapegoat” him for the actions of others, despite a lack of supporting evidence.

Baldwin’s legal team argues that the prosecution was driven by professional or political motives, violating Baldwin’s constitutional rights. The actor is seeking punitive damages to the fullest extent of the law. In response, the office of prosecutor Kari Morrissey acknowledged Baldwin’s plans to sue and expressed readiness to face the case in court.

The trial was dismissed in July 2023 after accusations of evidence suppression surfaced. Key evidence, including ammunition that could have supported Baldwin’s defense, was not disclosed by the prosecution. Baldwin’s legal team contended that this concealment prevented them from mounting a proper defense.

Baldwin has expressed gratitude for the support he received from his followers and shared an emotional message on Instagram after the dismissal, thanking those who stood by him and his family throughout the ordeal.
