February 21, 2025: Angela Bassett recently opened up about her viral reaction after losing the Best Supporting Actress Oscar to Jamie Lee Curtis at the 2023 Academy Awards. Two years after the incident sparked criticism, the actress defended her “disappointed” facial expression, sharing her thoughts in a new interview.

“I found it interesting,” Bassett said, adding, “Interesting that I wouldn’t be allowed to be disappointed at an outcome where I thought I was deserving.” She explained that despite being a supporter of her fellow nominees, the moment was personal for her given the time and effort she had put into her work.

Bassett, who was nominated for her role as Queen Ramonda in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, expressed how much the award meant to her. “I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given,” said the 66-year-old actress.

Although Curtis won the Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once, marking her first-ever Oscar win, Bassett’s portrayal in Wakanda Forever earned her widespread critical acclaim. Bassett had already won a Golden Globe for the same role, which further added to her prestige during awards season.

In her emotional acceptance speech, she paid tribute to legendary Black actresses who paved the way for her, including Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson, and Rosalind Cash.

Despite not winning the Oscar, Bassett’s powerful career continues to inspire many, and she remains an influential figure in the entertainment world.
