Anika Noni Rose Responds To Disney’s Cancellation Of Tiana Series

March 13, 2025: Actor Anika Noni Rose has expressed her disappointment and heartfelt reaction to Disney’s recent decision to cancel Tiana, the animated musical series based on the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which was set to air on Disney+. The project, first announced in December 2020, was expected to bring Rose back to reprise her role as Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, as the character’s journey was to continue in the new series.

Taking to Instagram, Rose shared her gratitude for the support and love she has received from fans, many of whom were also saddened by the news of the series’ cancellation. She expressed deep disappointment over the abrupt end to Tiana’s story in series form, which she believes was long overdue and much anticipated by fans of the character.

“Last week, an announcement was made regarding the cancellation of the series, Tiana. I’ve been getting loads of messages expressing kindness, support, and overwhelming disappointment,” Rose wrote on her Instagram post. “I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short. The series was a long time coming, and a lot of beautiful work was put into it by all of the creatives involved, including but not limited to long-time champion Jenn Lee, our wonderful writer/director Joyce Sherri, some fabulous animators, and an amazing music team.”

Despite the setback, Rose encouraged her fans to continue showing their support for the upcoming Tiana Special Event, which will air soon. She expressed her hope that, even though the series was canceled, fans would rally behind the event, just as they had supported the series.

“As hurtful as it is for anything you’ve put your heart and soul in to be prematurely ended, my hope is that when what is now to be a ‘Tiana Special Event’ airs that all of your beautiful, loving, loyal fans who’ve been championing not just the series, but a Princess And The Frog sequel, tune in,” she said.

She urged fans to make their voices heard by watching the event and sharing it with others. “And when I say tune in, I mean, tell your friends, family, coworkers, babysitters, tell all the people you know who have loved Princess Tiana, Naveen, Louis, Charlotte, Mama Odie, and the magic they’ve created over the years and make sure you are watching. Show your love and desire in the numbers. Make that desire an undeniable and real thing.”

Rose ended her post on a hopeful note, promising that she and the team would continue working hard to bring the best possible content to fans. “Until then, we will be continuing to work hard to bring you the most beautiful content we can.”

The Princess and the Frog movie, set in 1920s New Orleans, follows the story of Tiana, a hardworking waitress with dreams of owning her own restaurant, who becomes a frog after kissing Prince Naveen, who has been turned into a frog by the evil witch doctor Facilier. The movie, which also featured Bruno Campos, Michael-Leon Wooley, Jim Cummings, Oprah Winfrey, and several other notable stars, became an iconic Disney film and was celebrated for its cultural significance and groundbreaking representation.

Despite the cancellation of the series, Rose and her fans are holding out hope for continued stories and content featuring Tiana and the characters from The Princess and the Frog.
