Anthony Mackie Confirms Return in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’: “It’s Going to Give That Old Marvel Feeling”

With the Russo Brothers back and a mega crossover of Avengers and X-Men, the 2026 Marvel film is set to be a nostalgic cinematic spectacle

Los Angeles, April 15: Anthony Mackie is officially suiting up once again as Sam Wilson/Captain America in Marvel’s much-anticipated Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters on May 1, 2026. In a recent interview with IGN, the actor teased the epic scale of the next Avengers outing and promised fans a return to the classic Marvel magic.

“We’re supposed to go out this week, and we’ll be out there doing it,” Mackie revealed. “Everybody’s excited. I feel with the script and having the Russo Brothers back, it’s going to be great.”

He continued,

“I’m really excited for what this project is going to be. It’s going to give the audience that old Marvel feeling that they always had.”

The upcoming film brings back Marvel heavyweights Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Paul Rudd (Ant-Man), Vanessa Kirby (Susan Storm), and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova). But the biggest twist? The X-Men are joining the Avengers on-screen for the first time ever in the MCU.

Confirmed returning X-Men include Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), James Marsden (Cyclops), and Kelsey Grammer (Beast).

Mackie, who made his Marvel debut in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) as Falcon, has since become a fan-favorite, reprising his role across multiple Avengers and Captain America films. In 2025, he fully embraced the mantle of Captain America in Captain America: Brave New World.

The star also headlined The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series on Disney+, which bridged his evolution from Falcon to the new Cap.

With the return of the Russo Brothers, a stacked ensemble, and the long-awaited Avengers–X-Men crossover, Avengers: Doomsday is shaping up to be the defining superhero event of a generation.
