Filmmaker calls backlash “unfair” amid row over eight-hour shift demand

March 3, 2026: Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has termed the criticism of Deepika Padukone over her reported eight-hour work shift demand as “awfully unfair,” saying professional collaborations should rest on mutual consent. Speaking on a podcast, Sinha remarked that if a producer or director is uncomfortable with an actor’s conditions, they can simply choose not to work together. He stressed that disagreements over schedules should remain private and not be turned into public controversies, adding that acting is physically demanding and fatigue is visible on the big screen.

Recalling his experience with late actor Rishi Kapoor during Mulk, Sinha shared how Kapoor had initially declined night shoots, and they later negotiated a limited number. He said such adjustments are part of filmmaking and should be handled professionally. The debate escalated after director Sandeep Reddy Vanga posted a strongly worded message on X criticising an unnamed actor for alleged “dirty PR games.” Vanga later confirmed casting Triptii Dimri in his upcoming film Spirit, amid reports that Deepika exited the project over contractual disagreements, including compensation terms if shooting exceeded 100 days.

Addressing the larger work culture issue in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Deepika said that overworking has been normalised and that eight hours of work a day is sufficient for physical and mental well-being. She argued that burnout should not be mistaken for commitment and noted that several male actors have followed similar work-hour practices without attracting comparable scrutiny.
